Advanced synthesizer and arpeggiator

The built-in synth is one of Reason’s highlights. It provides six types of oscillators and four styles of filters, which gives you a broad palette for sculpting tones. A step sequencer is integrated directly into the synth, and a modular-style matrix lets you route modulation in detailed ways, so sound designers can push patches in many directions.

Reason also includes a single-voice arpeggiator that can run in several operation modes. It has its own pattern section, which lets you build and vary rhythmic note sequences instead of relying only on simple, fixed arpeggio behaviors.

Powerful sequencing and mixing

Reason’s sequencer is designed for complex arrangements. It supports multiple lanes within a track, so you can manage different parts or variations neatly. Vector-based automation lets you draw and edit parameter changes with precision over time, and the sequencer can create lanes that correspond to specific devices, keeping your projects organized as they grow.

The mixer offers 32 channels, enough to handle sizable sessions. Together with the sequencer, it forms a solid backbone for balancing instruments, layering parts, and managing detailed mixes without leaving the application.

Audio recording with flexible timing and pitch

From version 6 onward, Reason introduced integrated audio recording. It is built to capture ideas with minimal clicking through menus, which keeps the focus on performance instead of configuration. Recording is written to unlimited hard disk tracks, and the system is described as rock solid, so larger sessions are supported without trimming the track count.

Time and pitch tools are another strong point. Reason uses non-destructive time stretching, so you can record first and decide on the tempo afterward. If you change the project tempo, the recorded audio adjusts with it. Audio transpose works in a similar way for pitch, letting you alter the key after recording and modify pitch with a simple click, again without permanently altering the original files.

Expanded sound library and effects presets

Reason’s Factory Sound Bank has grown substantially. It now contains thousands of additional patches and loops for the instruments included in the program. That makes it easier to audition ideas quickly and find starting points that match your track.

On top of that, there are hundreds of presets created specifically for the Pulveriser, The Echo, and Alligator effects. These ready-made settings help you explore what the effects can do, from subtle treatments to more dramatic processing, without manual tweaking from scratch every time.

Integration, flexibility, and learning curve

Reason can integrate smoothly with other software and with external hardware already in your setup, which adds to its flexibility. You are not locked into using it in isolation and can connect it to existing gear or programs as part of a larger rig.

At the same time, this depth comes with a learning curve. The software is explicitly described as not aimed at newcomers, and that is evident as soon as you open it.
